Songwriter's Companion App Reviews

19 Customer Reviews:

This app is great for documenting pre-composed songs or ideas that you might have while songwriting. One feature I would love to see in the future is a Music Theory tab with all of the common chord progressions to further assist in song composition. Great work devs!

This app is a superb tool for songwriters! The best I’ve seen yet. However, it doesn’t accommodate capturing ideas on the fly (away from my Mac). That’s where most of my ideas are jotted down or recorded on an audio app on my iPhone. Do you have plans to create companion iPhone/iPad apps (with iCloud sync between the the Mac version)? The iPad would be a great tool for songwriting and displaying lyrics for live performances. It could also play a backup track while displaying the lyrics. The iPhone version would be useful for remote songwriting and as an on-the-go sonic sketchpad for recording song ideas. If you don’t develop it, someone else will. Only a matter of time ;)

Not affiliated with this product… I discovered it yesterday. So far, amazing functionality. Great tagging/labling. My favorite feature is the export by far… You can keep audio and text on the projects within the app but then you can export them (the app organizes everything into subfolders in finder). I’m really impressed. App seems reliable. *Only issue so far is that the RHYMES TAB does not work in Mac’s full screen mode.

I really like this app for writing and developing songs. Its straightforward and simple to use, with some nice features, and it works well with no glitches. What I like most is the way it makes it easier to keep song lyrics and ideas organized and accessible, so I dont lose them or forget about them. I like being able to open the program and see a list of the songs Im working on all in one place. Importing is easy. It was simple and quick to import songs and song-ideas that were in text files or Word docs into this app. Theres an export function too, that I havent used. The text editor is straightforward and works great, with simple control of font sizes and styles, and paragraph alignment. The app includes a rhyming dictionary and a regular dictionary. I appreciate the way the rhyming dictionary allows you to control your search to get stronger or lighter rhymes. A couple of other features are nice: The song list includes a customizable "label" column that is useful for categorizing songs or ideas. I found this helpful for tagging pieces I need to work on next. The "version" feature is nice too, for those times I want to try out some alternate lyric ideas but dont want to lose the first ones... Just "duplicate" the lyric, and the program creates a new version to play with, leaving the original intact. The audio recorder works fine and will come in especially handy when Ive got a melodic idea and want to quickly get it down before I forget it. Its fine for recording and playing back a straightforward single-track performance of a song - nothing fancy, but it works well. Very handy and helpful application!

Ive always been a bit scattered with my creative ideas for songs and usually end up with lyrics, ideas, chord progressions, riffs, etc scattered around my studio on post-it notes, napkins, and in the margins of the days junk mail. My system wasnt perfect but it was what I was used to. So I was skeptical that a computer app would be of any use to me but decided to give it a shot. Wow, what a great surprise! With very little effort I was organizing lyrics and ideas and actually putting them together in a coherent way that made me look at what I had in a different way. Lo and behold, I found myself writing a song. The app is well-organized so that you And your ideas) will be too. It is a great tool for songwriters that is easy to use and well worth the price.

I really appreciate how instantly functional this app is. As one who has lots of songs in various forms and drafts, it gives me one place to collect not only the lyrics, but notes and rough recordings so I dont lose those melodies when they appear. And I like being able to sort them into labels and produce copies and alternate versions easily. I wish I could have a twin app for the ipad to make it more portable. I dont have problems dragging audio in and out for use in other apps. I am hoping for chord notations to update soon. Forgetting actual chord voicings and progressions is a problem I have with paper versions and garage band alike.

howdoigetanickname · 13 years ago

The basis of this app is simple, yet genius, and Ive been looking for something like it for a long time. As a songwriter, I have song titles, lyrics, rhythms, riffs, sound samples, and many other things Ive created or written cluttered all over. I have my samples created and recorded in Garageband and on my iPhone, my titles and lyrics are scattered throughout Pages and the notes app on my phone, and I have various other things written down in notebooks. Its great to have all these tools to individually put down my ideas, but that process is anything but perfect. Notebooks get lost and thrown away, computers get reformatted, iPhones go out of date (rather quickly), and Ive lost much of my work because sometimes it just gets forgotten about in the busy and ever-changing thing we call life. This app allows me to put all of these things in one place that I can rely on. I dont need a dictionary, normal or rhyming, and I dont have to worry about putting a piece of a song somewhere I may not find it later. Its not often that I write reviews, but it looks to me as if this app is severely underrated. If youre a songwriter and are wondering if this app will do what you want it to do, take it from me, it will. The maker of the app directly responded to the only negative review that was made about it. You have to admit, that takes some dedication. It pains me to see that with the small portion of reviews that have been written, that one negative review has brought the average rating of this app down. Thats why Im writing this review. Anyway, Im sorry for the lengthy review, but lets sum things up in a sentence: Songwriter to songwriter, if you need a tool to get organized and focused, this app is the answer to our wishes/prayers.

Very organized. Allows you to keep track of melody and hook ideas for each song add notes, also includes a rhyme dictionary and wikipedia everything you need! Very nice for not losing song ideas! Awesome!

NoahKrussow · 13 years ago

Do you write lyrics? Type them, theres a text tab. Do you write melodies or compose chord progressions? Record them, theres an audio tab. Do you have notes or thoughts about the song that arent lyric? Type them in the notes tab. Search by title or lyric fragment. Use the rhyming dictionary, and do it all in a super-streamlined app that just lets you start creating without any learning curve. Great. In this era of bloated software with a trillion features, this app is a delight.

Im disappointed because I was expecting the rhyme dictionary to have more stuff in it…For example I type in "lie" and three words come up…There are definitely more words that rhyme with "lie" than that and I was expecting to see more….

For those who have a hard time keeping lyrics organized, this is an amazing app! Record a demo of what you want it to sound like and the ability to record more than one for each song is great! Sometimes we have different ideas for the same song and we can throw our ideas down as audio, notes, or simply just write out the lyrics. This is exactly what Ive been looking for and have always needed. Has a rhyming dictionary, dictionary, thesaurus and even wikipedia integrated. The ability to import lyrics is also nice! Importing audio and exporting audio is nothing but a drag and drop to and from the app!! For $5 I havent found anything close to the usefulness of this app for this price or any price really. Get it Noww!! lol :P Youll love it

this is a great app. just what i was lookign for a table wight al my song the dates created modifie, difrent version to be able to record. but i believe it could be better is great now, but it could have a few more features that woul dtake it into the next. level. the app is great as it is it does not need to get more complicatted. but i think it needs to be updated with the changes that ha e been noted to the developer. since like 2 years ago.

What a waste of time!!

Unable to get audio functioning, easy to delete your lyrics, by accident, unintuitive interface and no help files..

One more added function

Adding the ability to attach sound files to the song entries would really round this app out for me.

I have found Songwriter’s Comanion to provide all the tools I need, in a very simple to use format. I had been using a well known competing product for 6 over years but the recent upgrade which requires access to the cloud was a turn off. Often times, I write in locations where I am not connected to the cloud, i.e: on the road, in the air, in the wilderness, or in a hotel without paying a $14 a day internet fees. Songwriter’s Companion allows me to access my songs and its rhyme dictionaries whereever I am. This is important to me. The ability to add chords with traditional symbols or the Nashville numbering system is allow. A great package at a great price! I am completely statisfied.

I’ve never found a good songwriting app to store everything. I’ve been writing actively for 12 years and this is the first app I’ve found acceptable for managing my collection of songs. I always write my songs through improv with just audio files so I will have multiple audio files of takes for a song I’m writing. This app lets you create a song file and store each of those audio files into that one song file. Also, it seems like the app itself copies the audio files so that everything is maintained within the app itself, which is a plus. Anyway, worth $8. Easily. This hasn’t been updated for over a year but it works perfectly with El Capitan.

dcarvak · 10 years ago

This app is fantastic for writing lyrical ideas and making chord charts. I’ve tried a lot of other apps to try to write songs with and this one finally has everything that you need. Basic lyric writing word processecor with song writing features like rhyme dictionaries - versions - and the ability to add chord references. The one thing that would make this app 5 stars is if you could synch it between computers - like from an iMac to a Macbook Pro and back and forth over the cloud. Other than that it’s great.

Big Doofus · 10 years ago

Makes writing much more organized, and all those off-takes have a home in a folder with the corresponding song they go to. Much easier way to browse for riffs to fit a lyric. The rhyme function is very cool, as well, can even find a rhyme based on sylables, neat.

The Hands-Down BEST Songwriting App!

I've tried every single songwriter app and software available over the past 10 years up until current day, and Songwriter's Companion outshines them all by miles! It is incredibly fast, intuitive, clean, stable, and has all the features you actually NEED versus unnecessary bells and whistles that you do not. ZERO monthly fees, ZERO microtransactions, all with the great joy of downloading and OWNING the app without a ridiculous subscription model...and without all the frustration of web-based apps. MasterWriter doesn't come close! My songwriting ouput has increased exponentially since the very first day I began using this app. I never write without it! And the developer is incredibly responsive to inquiries; and with updates that are required for new operating systems! All for the price of ONE fancy coffee?!? Get this app and get to work! You won't regret it!

Great, But For Inconsistent Launching

Three stars for the moment, bc the app has lots of potential to be terrific. On my M1 Mac Mini (OS X 11.2.3) it worked once and I loved it. But I could not get the app to launch again after closing it. I'm sure its just a glitch in updating to the new chip and OS version. Getting to App Support required a WordPress account, which I really didn't want to deal with. So, three stars for now, will update I'm sure.

Crash, Crash, Crash!

I just lost an entire hour's worth of lyric writing that followed months of songwriter's block. The dam had broke and I was streaming the best lyrics I'd written in years. Then all I did was try to copy those lyrics so I could share them, and the program crashed, killing it all mercilessly! Gone in the blink of an eye. You can have your crashy-crash trash application. I want back the paper and pen. They don't crash.

Great App - Solid Customer Service

This app is a great find. I've been working with multiple notebooks for so long and I'm not the best organized person. This app has helped me get focused - in a very short time. I really like the layout and intuitiveness; the dictionary, thesaurus and rhyming helper are a big plus too. The onboard audio recorder is brilliant. You can make all sorts of audio notes right there - plus a separate written "Notes" page/tab too. Really worth the price. In fact, I'd say it's underpriced. I had one problem relating to the app not loading (a known bug that was documented on the developer's website, but with Big Sur I wasn't knowledgable enough to be able to implement the fix.) I emailed the developer and he got the problem fixed for me. Highly recommend the app for any songwriter who needs help getting organized. Get more writing done, less paper chasing...

Holy Tights Batman This is Awesome!

It’s only been 40 years since I’ve been writing music and all these years I’ve been needing something like this! Today I was getting organized as I’m prepairing for my next release and decided I’d write up all my songs in the computer instead of trying to read my terrible handwriting. As I began the old way of using a word processor and putting in the chords as I needed them, I thought to myself, there has to be a better way and now I know there is! So many great features, one of my favs is having the song in a window and being able to stop and start as you type the lyric! That is the bomb! Another great feature is the pick the key and the chords you need are right there! My only grip would be for basic chords this is fine, but if you are needing a maj7 or 6th or anything like that, you have to put that in manually, but hey for 7 bucks, come on, not going to mark them for that! Great program and I bet this guy or gal is a songwriter to make this so perfect for us trying to get our music out there!

Poor operation

Was working fine now app will no longer open. what went wrong?

I love this program!

Maybe it could have more features... but then it would be a complex mess, like so many other programs I have tried. I LOVE Songwriter's companion. It is simple and doesn't get in the way of my writing. It is one of the best investments in my writing that I have made. AND I know my song collection won't become a mess in this program. I am very grateful, because it just WORKS.

Brain4Music · 7 years ago

Not great, but the best.

The app has a lot of shortcomings, but what it does it does well and I find it indispensible. Previously I had kept track of my songs in a Scrivener document, which is an okay solution if you already own Scrivener but it doesn’t easily allow for you to move quickly through the details of a song, and in this app we have the tools to sort our songs and an imperfect but worthwhile setup for importing voice memos from iTunes or whatever you use to jot down your ideas. My wish list is a mile long, but at the end of the day I have to say I couldn’t live without this program, and it causes me minimal frustration and no harm. I’ll add that the rhyme dictionary is phenomenal, and I can’t imagine the complaints I’ve read stem from anything other than misunderstanding. The app is worth the asking price or better for this feature alone.

Great App but no cloud sync...

This would be a 5 STAR app with cloud sync. As soon as it’s available in this app I’ll give 5 Stars. This app provides all the tools a writer needs for writing lyrics and keeping track of all your songs. Very, very handy to use. The rhyme data base could be a little bigger. I’m sure this app will come with better things as it’s developed. Thanks for a great app. :)

Better than I expected

This is the program I have been looking for to help me write my P&W songs as well as solo originals. Robert is great at getting back with you with your questions/suggestions too. Give this a try I don’t think you will be disappointed in the least, I know I am not!
